Council Finds Secession Studies Inadequate

The Los Angeles City Council adopted a position paper Friday stating that the studies of San Fernando Valley and harbor-area secession are inadequate and that the breakup would financially harm what remains of the city.

The council approved a report by the city administrative officer concluding that the draft financial studies done by the Local Agency Formation Commission “have serious shortcomings and lack details necessary to successfully split apart a full-service city the size and complexity of Los Angeles.”

The council also approved another report finding that a delay in the collection of taxes for city services could create a $200-million shortfall in the first year of a new Valley city.
