UC Santa Barbara 74, Cal State Fullerton 71--Branduinn Fullove, The Times’ Ventura County player of the year last season at Simi Valley High, scored 22 points and made two free throws with 10 seconds to play to help the Gauchos to the Big West Conference victory.
UC Santa Barbara (5-7, 2-0) trailed, 71-70, after Ike Harmon of the Gauchos, who finished with 17 points, made a field goal after a turnover with 38 seconds remaining.
Cal State-Fullerton (1-12, 0-3) fouled Mark Hull on the Gauchos’ next possession with 14 seconds left.
Hull, a Hoover High graduate, made both free throws to finish with 13 points.
The Gauchos, who made 49% of their shots, had a 54-41 lead early in the second half. Fullerton erased the deficit with a 10-0 spurt that tied the game, 61-61.
