Unending Hostility in Middle East

One more Israeli helicopter, for the hundredth uncountable time, strikes into the Palestine population and produces the same result--more retaliations that will produce yet more retaliations in return--again (July 18). If it were not for the loss of life and unrelenting disruption of daily life, the whole scene would be laughable. The terrorist acts of the Palestinians are unspeakable, yet the rhetoric and accompanying military strikes by the Israelis are unexplainable, given the lack of effect they have.
One is left to assume that the Israeli government now believes its own propaganda and seeks to bury a whole group of human beings, much like another military power in history sought to do. No other explanation is possible.

The 100% pro-Israeli piece by Robert Satloff (“End Dialogue If Arafat Stays Unresponsive,” Commentary, July 12) misses the point. The two sides are equally to blame for the standoff. Yasser Arafat wants the Jews to disappear completely and Sharon wants to steal the West Bank one house at a time. At the present time there is no will to compromise on either side. This is going to get a lot worse before it gets better.
