Kenya Tourism, Trade Expo Opens Today

Kenya’s government and business leaders will showcase their nation’s safari, coffee and handicraft industries when they open a weeklong tourism and trade exhibition in Los Angeles today.
A Kenyan delegation, led by Trade Minister Nicholas Biwott, plans to market the East African nation as a world-class tourist destination and a country ripe for investment.
The exhibitions at the Sheraton Universal will feature booths devoted to Kenya’s safari, horticulture and coffee and tea industries.
Abbey Walusimbi, president of the Southland-based African Federation, a nonprofit that is helping to stage the exhibition, said Kenya is among several African countries trying to expand trade with the United States following last year’s passage of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act.
“We want people to know that Africa is a place where the right businesses can develop and thrive,” Walusimbi said.
The exhibition ends Saturday with a banquet and cultural show to be attended by Biwott, Gov. Gray Davis and other business leaders.
