Six rare black rhinos fetched a record $68,480 each at the world’s biggest wildlife auction, bought by a German bidder operating a private game reserve in South Africa.
“I have white rhinos on my [50,000-acre] game farm . . . but I really wanted to add black rhinos. I would have been willing to pay anything for them,” said the winning bidder, who declined to be named.
The annual auction in KwaZulu-Natal province raised about $2.7 million for conservation projects and community development.
Buyers include owners of private reserves as well as outfitters who run hunting operations.
