With “Winslow Homer and the Critics: Forging a National Art in the 1870s” on display at LACMA and “Remington, Russell and the Language of Western Art” coming to the Bowers Museum on July 7, the American theme continues at the San Diego Museum of Art when “Grandma Moses in the 21st Century” opens there Saturday. The exhibition will survey more than 80 idyllic paintings by American folk art icon Anna Mary Robertson Moses (1860-1961), who took up painting in her 70s when arthritis forced her to give up embroidery.* “Grandma Moses in the 21st Century,” San Diego Museum of Art, 1450 El Prado, Balboa Park, San Diego. “Mitzvah on the Mesa,” by Lori Tubert and Richard “Rico” Freedman, is a live radio play dramatizing the true story of a Jewish trader who fought for the rights of Pueblo Indians in New Mexico in the late 1800s.

Those Satan-worshiping, blasphemy-hurling, hard-rock-hammering nihilists are back to corrupt our children. Three decades ago that could mean only Black Sabbath. Nowadays, it must be Marilyn Manson. Electric Daisy, the first big rave of the summer, gets a distinctively Southern California twist: Instead of an all-night bacchanal, it’s an all- day bacchanal in the San Fernando Valley, starting at noon and rolling on past midnight. The legendary Maynard Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band share a jazz double bill with Tom Scott and the L.A. Taiko drumming brings to mind rhythmic discipline, men in traditional Japanese costumes, and most of all, lots of drums. But at Taiko Jam 3.0, you’ll see how taiko has evolved in North America.
