Stanford’s Mendoza Chosen National Player of the Week

Jessica Mendoza was selected national player of the week for leading No. 5-ranked Stanford to the Speedline Invitational softball title in Tampa, Fla.

Mendoza, a 1998 Camarillo High graduate, went 12 for 26 in eight games with three home runs and six stolen bases, and scored 12 runs, including the game-winners in the semifinal and championship games.

The junior center fielder, who has 41 runs batted in, leads the Cardinal (28-2-1) with a .475 batting average, 13 home runs, 20 doubles, 20 stolen bases and 57 runs.

BASKETBALL

* Guard Courtney Young of Buena High, who is headed to Tennessee, has been selected to play in the Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Assn./Nike All-American game on April 7 at Connecticut.

* Ron Haywood has been hired to succeed Kevin Wiser as girls’ coach at Louisville.

Haywood, who served as Wiser’s assistant last season, was coach at Highland in 1998-99 and 1999-2000.

SOCCER

* Midfielder Mike Enfield of Ventura High has been selected a Parade magazine All-American.

Enfield, who has committed to UCLA, is a member of the under-19 national team. He was All-Southern Section and a Times all-region selection in 2000.

* Defender Matthew Braun of Royal has been chosen a U.S. Navy third-team Scholastic All-American.

Braun has a 4.6 grade-point average and plans to study computer engineering. He has been accepted at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UCLA but hasn’t decided where he’ll go to college.
