Smith, Brown Chosen All-City in Basketball

Sophomore Steve Smith of Taft High and senior Cecil Brown of Canoga Park have been selected to the All-City Section boys’ basketball team.
Second-team selections included senior Mike Charleston of Grant and senior Shayne Berry of Chatsworth.
Andre Patterson of Washington and Kenton Paulino of Fremont were chosen co-players of the year.
* Senior guard Erin Buescher is The Master’s College first women’s basketball player to be selected NAIA All-American.
Buescher, three-time Big West Conference player of the year at UC Santa Barbara before transferring to Master’s for religious reasons, led the Mustangs with averages of 17.6 points and 9.3 rebounds, and with 97 steals and 49 blocked shots.
Sophomore center Leslie DuBois was chosen to the third team, and junior guard Jorden Whittington received honorable mention.
GOLF
* Jason Gore of Valencia, taking time off from the PGA Tour, shot a course-record eight-under-par 62 in the first round earlier in the week but finished second to Doug Garwood of Pasadena on Thursday in a California Tour event at Yucaipa Valley Golf Club in Yucaipa.
Garwood finished at 65-63-65--193, with Gore at 62-66-68--196.
Gore’s 28-34--62 broke the course record of 65 set by John Ray Leary of Culver City.
