Student Privacy Versus Dog Searches

Re “Use of Dogs to Find Drugs on Campus Protested,” March 18.
I was absolutely amazed and angered by the attitude of Isbell Middle School Principal Sheryl Misenhimer, who said, “My philosophy behind this is that I’d rather overstep someone’s rights and get sued than find one of our kids overdosed in the bathroom.”
Hitler and Mussolini also felt that the end justifies the means. I wonder what her reaction would be if someone “overstepped” her rights. I also wonder if the school board is as cavalier as she is regarding lawsuits.

It is unfortunate that we have to compromise some of our privacy rights to combat the spread of drugs. I don’t like the idea of having my luggage and person searched and scanned at the airports but I recognize that the goal is to prevent rather than react to serious problems.
Some of those against the dog search for drugs are the same kind of people who never check on their kids’ activities or check out their room at home. They wake up one morning and find their kids are involved with drugs and blame the school.
