A Los Angeles Police Department reserve officer was wounded Wednesday when he dropped a cartridge, which exploded when it hit the ground, police said.
The cartridge “struck the ground exactly right” to trigger it, LAPD spokesman John Pasquariello said.
The unidentified officer was treated and released from County-USC Medical Center, police said. The accident took place at the Police Academy in Elysian Park’s combat range just before 4:30 p.m., Pasquariello said.
“It was very freakish. Extremely freakish,” he said. “I’ve never heard of something like it.”
