Re “Bruin License Plates Face Extinction,” May 8: It is hard to believe that the Department of Motor Vehicles bureaucracy is so overburdened that it cannot keep track of any vanity plate of less than an issue of 5,000. So what if the prisoners only produce 20 or 30 plates a year after the initial issue? Like there is so much else to do at Folsom prison. UCLA is a California-supported institution and the $100,000 or so it receives from the vanity plate fees each year goes entirely to scholarships. This is a great way for alums to show their support for the university.
