‘West Wing’ Ends Presidential Season

Multiple sclerosis. Tax cuts. Big tobacco companies. And the death of Mrs. Landingham.
It’s been a tough term for President Josiah Bartlet, the central figure of “The West Wing,” which reaches the end of its second captivating season tonight at 9 on NBC.
Bartlet, unerringly played by Martin Sheen, has tackled a steady stream of crises and tragedies over the last few months, the most recent being an attack on the American Embassy in Haiti as well as the sudden demise of his trusted secretary (Kathryn Joosten), who was killed in a car accident at the end of last week’s poignant episode.
The network has parceled out few details on tonight’s cliffhanging finale, but Peacock promos reveal that the White House staff will attend Mrs. Landingham’s funeral. In addition, Bartlet will face a ravenous press asking pointed questions about whether he will seek a second term after the revelation of his condition.
Humble as ever, NBC declares, “This is as good as television gets.”
