Britain Earmarks Millions for War on Terrorism

LONDON — Britain will set aside $168.6 million to fight the war on terrorism, the bulk of it going to the armed forces for equipment, the Times newspaper reported today.
The newspaper said Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown will announce the emergency funding Tuesday as part of his pre-budget report.
Britain has been the main ally of the United States in the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan for harboring Osama bin Laden, Washington’s prime suspect in the Sept. 11 suicide attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
The intelligence services MI5 and MI6 will get $28.2 million for improved surveillance equipment and new technology to help follow the trail of terrorist finances, the Times said.
The newspaper said Brown also will announce a $282.8-million Christmas payment to Britain’s 8.5 million pensioner households.
