Old Grenade Explodes, Killing 3 Children

A discarded grenade exploded and killed three children as they played with it in a field in a rural area of northern Peru, police said.
The accident happened Sunday near Alonso de Alvarado Roque, 390 miles north of Lima, the capital. Police said a nearby military outpost had used the field for target practice.
Yarik Cahuaza, 8, found the explosive and hid it under her shirt to keep it away from four other children, police said. The girl dropped the grenade and it exploded when it hit the ground, killing her and two boys, brothers Victor and Segundo Chuquitay, ages 9 and 12.
