Irvine Northwood 35, Irvine University 7--In only its second year of varsity football, Northwood (8-0, 3-0) used a balanced attack to gain sole possession of first place in the Pacific Coast League.
Timberwolf quarterback Dan Tomcheck completed eight of 16 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns, and running back Andy Meyer had 22 carries for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
University running back Scott Pickett was held to 44 yards in 18 carries and fumbled on the second play from scrimmage. Northwood’s Steve Lucas picked it up and returned it 17 yards to the 28, setting up a 26-yard run by Meyer for a 7-0 lead.
Tomcheck later hit Brian Sipkovich with a 32-yard scoring pass, and less than four minutes later, Meyer scored on a four-yard run with 1:37 remaining in the half to make it 21-0.
University (7-2, 2-1) managed only 55 yards in the first half. Trojan quarterback Nick Gerakos completed six of 19 passes for 92 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
