Angola’s UNITA rebel group confirmed that its No. 2 leader, Gen. Antonio Dembo, was dead of diabetes, ending weeks of speculation about his whereabouts.
“Vice President Dembo died on March 3. He was ill, suffering from acute diabetes,” Marcial Dachala, a spokesman for the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola, said by telephone from the Angolan capital, Luanda.
Angola’s government and the UNITA rebels were to sign a formal cease-fire in Luanda today.
