38 Smuggled Children Sent Back to El Salvador

More than three dozen Central American children who were being smuggled to Los Angeles are back in their homeland after being detained in Guatemala, a Salvadoran official said Monday.
Guatemalan authorities last week intercepted the group of 38 Salvadoran minors, including a 2 1/2-year-old boy.
All were destined to be reunited with relatives in the United States, authorities said.
The children were detained in Guatemala on Friday as part of a multinational investigation.
They may be the largest group of trafficked children ever discovered together in the often-hazardous smuggling corridor from Central America to the United States, authorities said.
The children were initially being brought to Los Angeles, but their families probably reside throughout the United States, according to authorities.
