James Riewer, 81; Headed L.A. County Human Relations Commission

James Riewer, 81, a former school administrator and president of the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission, died April 15 in a Redondo Beach hospital of undisclosed causes.
A native of Long Beach, Riewer was a classically trained musician but earned degrees in education at Northwestern University and USC. He served in the Army during World War II.
Riewer was principal of Palmdale High School in the late 1950s, and in 1960 was named superintendent of the Antelope Valley Joint Union High School District. During his tenure there, he was president of the Antelope Valley Kiwanis Club.
In 1970, Riewer was named superintendent of the South Bay Union High School District, a job he held until his retirement in 1979. After moving to Redondo Beach in 1970, he was elected president of the Redondo/Riviera Rotary Club and later of the South Bay Hospital District Board of Directors. He headed the county Human Relations Commission in the early 1980s.
