Gottschalks Posts Smaller Quarterly Loss

Gottschalks Inc. reported a smaller net loss for the second quarter and said it was “cautiously optimistic” for the rest of the year. The Fresno-based department store firm reported a net loss of $2.1 million, or 17 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $2.8 million, or 22 cents, a year ago. Sales fell 1.8% to $155.9 million.
Gottschalks shares closed down 5 cents at $2.30 on the New York Stock Exchange.
