Businessman Wins Race for Mayor of New Orleans

A businessman making his first run for office coasted to victory over a popular police chief in the runoff for mayor of New Orleans.
With 323 of 442 precincts reporting, Cox Communications Vice President Ray Nagin, 45, had 49,185 votes, or 57%, to 36,961 votes, or 43%, for New Orleans Police Supt. Richard Pennington, 54.
Nagin will replace two-term Mayor Marc Morial.
Both candidates are political newcomers who took leave from their jobs to campaign after voters turned down Morial’s attempt to change term limits.
