“It’s essential for the NIH to do research outside of orthodox medicine, because a large percent of the U.S. population is already using complementary approaches, spending billions each year of their own money on them. If these things are effective--acupuncture, for instance, or herbs--then certainly the government and insurers should be the ones to pick up the bill. Some of these things people try are not evidence-based and may cause harm, too.
“The truth is, most physicians are totally ignorant about herbs. I would like some sort of database where we can all look at effectiveness of these things and what’s indicated for various conditions. When we have that kind of database, I believe herbs will be a part of the formularies at pharmacies and hospitals, and will be better regulated.”
