1 Teen Killed, 1 Hurt as SUV Veers Off Highway

A 17-year-old driver from Thousand Oaks was killed Sunday morning when his vehicle rolled over an embankment on California 118 and hit a tree.
Kurt Albert Mautner was pronounced dead at the scene, California Highway Patrol officials said. Passenger Chris Chatfield, also 17, of Thousand Oaks, was taken to Simi Valley Hospital with major injuries.
The accident occurred about 11:15 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near the Sycamore Drive exit. Kurt was trying to switch lanes when he swerved to avoid hitting a car, authorities said. He was driving about 65 mph, the posted speed limit, and lost control of the 1996 Isuzu Rodeo, they said.
