WTO Rejects U.S. Import Duties on Steel

The World Trade Organization struck down U.S. steel import duties imposed in 1993, handing the European Union a victory in its battle against U.S. protection for its steel industry.
The WTO outlawed duties as high as 37% imposed on steelmakers including Anglo-Dutch firm Corus Group.
The preliminary ruling adds to tensions over steel tariffs imposed by President Bush this year. Spokesmen for the EU, U.S. and WTO had no comment on the still-confidential ruling, which will become final next month. The U.S. can appeal.
