Weekend box office

The dog days of summer are here and the performance of this summer’s movies are running neck-and-neck with last summer’s films. Box office revenue currently stands at $3.3 billion -- slightly behind the $3.32 billion generated by this time last summer, according to box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations Co.
Meanwhile, movie attendance continues to lag by an estimated 2% -- perhaps indicating waning interest in some of the sequels released this summer.
In limited release, meanwhile, romantic comedy “Le Divorce” grossed $516,834 at 34 theaters for a per theater average of $15,201, while the new Dana Brown surfing documentary, “Step Into Liquid,” debuted with $135,985 at five theaters for an average of $27,197.
