City, Citing Expense, Cancels Holiday Parade

Breaking a long-standing holiday tradition, the city will not have its annual Christmas parade this year due to its cost.
“The city regretfully cancels the 2003 Christmas parade in an effort to reduce all but essential spending,” Mayor Eric J. Perrodin said Monday. “The state’s financial crisis has had a great impact on all cities.”
The parade has been a tradition for more than 20 years.
“We would have had to spend anywhere from $85,000 to $100,000 for security for the parade,” said Perrodin. But “we felt it was better to save a few jobs than have a parade for one day.”
