Indian Reservation Expansion Fought

From Staff and Wire Reports

The county is asking federal officials to scrutinize reservation expansion efforts by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.

In a letter sent Tuesday to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Board of Supervisors said a proposal by the tribe to connect the two parts of its reservation by annexing 12 acres in between could lead to a drop in county tax revenue.

The tribe says annexing land that runs along the Zanja de Cota Creek would simply allow it to make whole its 127-acre reservation.
