Six billboards at Humboldt Bay that have been the subject of political and legal controversy for decades will be torn down next fall, officials said.
The deal was reached Dec. 13 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which owns the land where the billboards stand, and Viacom Outdoors of Berkeley.
For 25 years, the government rejected lease payments for the billboards, saying they had to go. Viacom wanted the government to pay for removal. Under the deal, however, Viacom will remove the billboards at its own expense.
