Immigrants Shouldn’t Complain About Enforcement of U.S. Laws

Re “Immigrants Fear Sweep by Border Patrol,” June 6:

Gee, I thought I lived in the United States of America, not “Alta California.” Now we have the Mexican Consulate organizing a protest in San Juan Capistrano against our Border Patrol enforcing the immigration laws of our country.

Of course The Times refers to the protesters as just “immigrants,” leaving out the annoying adjective “illegal.” What’s next? Traffic scofflaws protesting the enforcement of the highway penal code? Criminals organizing to protest the enforcement of drug laws and felonies such as assault, burglary, robbery, rape and murder? What ever happened to the concept of a law-abiding and orderly society?

I am concerned about a meeting that was held June 5 in San Juan Capistrano. This meeting was organized by the Mexican Consulate. The purpose was for illegal immigrants and their supporters to express their displeasure with the Border Patrol for doing an important part of its job, rounding up and deporting people who have illegally entered the United States.

Participants were chanting, “We are Mexican -- don’t take us away,” and carrying signs reading “We Don’t Want the Border Patrol to Round Us Up.”

Mexican Vice Consul Luis Chao complained that illegal immigrants were being picked up outside coin laundries and supermarkets. Where would Chao prefer that his countrymen be arrested?

It is important for all of us to work together to solve the illegal immigration problem. Don’t support businesses that employ illegal immigrants. Let your elected officials know that you support the Border Patrol. Report suspected illegal immigrants.

The reason the 200 immigrants met with a representative of the Mexican Consulate instead of their U.S. congressional representative is because these people are in fact illegal immigrants who have no right to be in this country. We shouldn’t be using taxpayer money to educate their children, teach them English or provide medical care. That is the responsibility of the Mexican government, not ours.

Anyone who is in this country illegally should be deported.
