Malik Meraj Khalid, 87, Pakistan’s former caretaker prime minister, died Friday in a hospital in the eastern city of Lahore. He had been ill since June 6 with a high fever and chest congestion.
Widely praised in political and social circles for his honesty, Khalid, a lawyer by profession, began his political career in 1968.
He joined the Pakistan People’s Party, led by Pakistan’s first elected prime minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
Khalid was elected speaker of the National Assembly, or Lower House of Parliament, in the 1970s.
He was caretaker prime minister in November 1996 for three months after former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s government was dismissed on charges of corruption and misrule.
