13 Dead After Police, Drug Gangs Clash

Violence between drug gangs and police left 13 people dead in Rio de Janeiro, officers said. One policeman died when drug traffickers driving past saw him on patrol and opened fire, police said. Two officers were killed in other shootouts.
In response, authorities moved in on a house with members of an alleged gang inside, and ended up in a gun battle, said a spokesman for state security department. Eight people in the house were killed, he said. Police also said they killed two alleged traffickers in other clashes.
