Man Turns In Artillery Shell; Center Evacuated

The civic center was evacuated for six hours Friday after a man brought a live artillery shell to a sheriff’s substation.
The man, whose name was not released, believed the 105-millimeter howitzer round was a harmless prop that he bought at an Anaheim scrap metal company, sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said.
After a friend convinced the man the shell should be examined by authorities, he brought it in about 7:30 a.m. When authorities realized the 2-foot-long, 5-inch-diameter shell posed a threat, area offices were evacuated and an U.S. Army ordinance disposal unit was called.
The shell was removed about 3 p.m. and destroyed in an Irvine field.
