Californian Accused of Spying Is Freed on Bail

Iran freed a UC Berkeley lecturer who had been jailed since July on suspicion of espionage, a prosecutor’s office spokesman said. Dariush Zahedi, an Iranian-born U.S. citizen, was released after his relatives posted $250,000 bail, Mohammed Shadabi said.
A close friend of Zahedi, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the lecturer was free to leave Iran but was required to return, possibly to stand trial. He said Zahedi appeared healthy after being released.
Zahedi, who was in Iran to see relatives, was taken to Evin prison near Tehran on July 10.
