The newly installed chief executive of Baltimore schools announced major reforms for the financially strapped district, including as many as 1,000 layoffs.
The layoffs, effective in January, will come from all areas of the system, with the last cuts being teachers, Bonnie S. Copeland said. As of June 30, the system had about $51 million in cumulative deficit. School officials said they were hoping to get the system in the black by June 30, 2005.
