About 50,000 people packed a square and surrounding roofs in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, hoping to prevent President Heydar Aliyev’s son from succeeding his father in elections this week.
As protesters waved flags and punched the air with their fists, Isa Gambar, leader of the opposition Musavat, or Equality, party, called on the crowd to descend on polling places Wednesday and remain there until ballots are counted to prevent foul play.
Aliyev’s son, Ilham, is strongly favored to win.
