The central government sent tents, seismological teams and cash to remote northwestern China a day after twin tremors, with magnitudes of 6.1 and 5.8, killed nine people and leveled houses.
Six people were seriously hurt and 37 suffered minor injuries, the official New China News Agency reported. More than 200 aftershocks had occurred, the government said.
The hardest-hit areas were Minle, Sunan and Shandan counties near the city of Zhangye, approximately 850 miles west of Beijing. Authorities said 143,000 people were affected. Government pictures from the scene showed collapsed stone houses.
