Fond Memories of Wilmington

Re “Wilmington Starts Pulling Itself Together,” Nov. 27: For those of us who grew up in Wilmington and are of a certain age (55), the mere fact that the Los Angeles Times had any more than a passing crime reference to the community, let alone 1,200-plus words, is truly amazing.
I lived in Wilmington from 1949 through 1980, and the Eastside/Westside distinctions in the article were a bit much.
A Wilmington resident is quoted as saying, “When I was a little girl, the only thing we had was Banning Park.” The Eastside had, and still has, the Mahar House, a settlement house-like organization that preformed the same function as Teen Post 108.
Moreover, when I was a kid trick-or-treating on Halloween, the very best houses in Wilmington were adjacent to Banning Park on the Eastside. A local dairy owner had a home in this area that actually had an indoor pool. Now if you want to talk about rivalries, try talking to residents of Wilmington and San Pedro. That’ll get real interesting real fast.
