Andreotti Acquitted in Mafia Collusion Case

Italy’s highest criminal court acquitted former Premier Giulio Andreotti of charges that he colluded with the Mafia during a long political career.
The Court of Cassation upheld a May 2003 ruling by a lower appeals court that there was insufficient evidence to convict Andreotti, now a senator-for-life. But by not returning a verdict of complete innocence, as sought by Andreotti, the ruling left some suspicion hanging over him.
Andreotti, 85, has always denied the charges.
