NBC, Fox in Wednesday ratings duel

NBC’s “Hawaii” was more “hang loose” than “cowabunga” in its premiere Wednesday night, as the cop drama won the night in total viewers but finished second to Fox’s debuting reality series “Renovate My Family” among young adults. CBS’ telecast of the Latin Grammys, meanwhile, hit a sour note.
“Hawaii” was the second of NBC’s new fall shows to get an early launch, meant to capitalize on the promotional push it and Tuesday’s “Father of the Pride” received during the Athens Olympics. With an average of 10.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research, “Hawaii” topped the 8.3 million who watched “Renovate My Family,” the lifestyle makeover show starring Jay McGraw, son of “Dr. Phil” McGraw.
Fox did better among 18- to 49-year-olds, with 5.2 million in that key demographic, compared with 4.2 million who tuned in for “Hawaii.”
The Latin Grammys drew 3.2 million viewers, down from 4.9 million last year despite the return of George Lopez as host.
