Lollapalooza lives again

Lollapalooza, the archetypal alt-rock concert tour that was canceled last year for lack of interest, returns this summer, but as a single-weekend event.
The 2005 edition will take place July 23 and 24 in Chicago’s Grant Park and will include a mix of hot new bands (the Killers, the Arcade Fire, Kaiser Chiefs, the Bravery) and respected alt-rock veterans (the Pixies, Weezer, Dinosaur Jr., the Dandy Warhols).
Despite a 2004 schedule that was to include the Pixies, Sonic Youth and Morrissey, the entire tour was canceled because of poor ticket sales, attributed by some to the veteran-heavy lineup. Lollapalooza, the brainchild of Jane’s Addiction front man Perry Farrell, created the model for non-mainstream, multi-act concert tours when it premiered in 1991. It went into decline after spawning numerous successful imitators.
Organizers hope that converting it into a single-city event will generate greater interest this year. Additional details are posted at www.lollapalooza.com.
