Police said thieves tunneled nearly 300 feet to a Central Bank vault in northeastern Brazil and stole about $65 million, in what has been described as the country’s biggest such robbery.
The money was stolen over the weekend from the Central Bank’s vault in the city of Fortaleza, in the northeast.
The thieves built a 13-foot deep, 262-foot tunnel strung with electric lights from a house to the vault, federal police said in a statement.
Brazil’s biggest previous bank heist occurred in 1999, when $16 million was stolen from a Sao Paulo bank.
