An 8-year-old boy died Wednesday after being struck by a pickup in Orange, police said.
Police did not release the name of the boy, who darted into traffic while chasing a ball on Orange Olive Road near Mesa Avenue shortly before 5:30 p.m., witnesses said. He ran into the path of the pickup, police said, which was traveling about 40 mph -- within the posted speed limit -- and was unable to stop in time.
The boy was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died, said Sgt. Eric Rosauer, a spokesman for the Orange Police Department. The driver was not held and the accident was under investigation, he said.
