Gutierrez Is Confirmed as Commerce Secretary

The Senate confirmed Carlos M. Gutierrez by voice vote as President Bush’s new Commerce secretary, a position in which he will lead the administration’s efforts to revive the country’s beleaguered manufacturing sector.
Gutierrez, 51, will replace Don Evans, who resigned to move back to Texas and reenter private industry. Gutierrez was chief executive of the Kellogg Co.
