Opposition Reportedly Leading in Election

Albanians voted in parliamentary elections, and exit poll data gave the opposition party of former President Sali Berisha the advantage.
Although the voting was generally calm, one election official was shot dead in the capital, Tirana; some polling stations remained open for three extra hours; and election monitors were investigating reports of irregularities in rural areas.
Both Berisha’s Democratic Party and the ruling Socialists back close U.S. ties and troop deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Both support integration with NATO and the European Union.
