Caltrans’ Folly

Re “Foes in Bay Area Bridge Dispute Meet in Middle,” June 25: The $6-billion Bay Bridge is a prime example of the folly of Caltrans. Our new governor tried to trim it, the old governor went along with Democrats in the Bay Area who wanted a “statement” bridge to match the western span, all at a time when competent engineers were on record saying the eastern span could be retrofitted at a fraction of the cost. No additional cars will transit the bay because of the $6 billion, while at the same time more motorists will die on Highway 138 in Phelan because there are no transportation dollars to provide for a high desert bypass freeway.
