Rock slides killed three climbers and seriously injured another on a popular peak in North Cascades National Park northeast of Seattle.
The victims were taking part in a class organized by a climbing club when the six-person group wound up in the path of the slides. Two climbers were unhurt.
The group was descending when falling rocks injured Jo Backus, 61, of Tacoma, the group leader, park spokesman Tim Manns said. A second slide killed Backus and two others.
