Samuel Caballeros scored with 10 minutes left to give Honduras a 1-0 victory over Panama in a CONCACAF Gold Cup first-round match Tuesday night at Miami.
The victory assured Honduras a first-place finish in Group A and a berth in Saturday’s quarterfinals against Costa Rica, which finished second on goal differential to the United States in Group B. The Hondurans, who are eliminated from World Cup qualifying, finished 2-0-1 in the group with seven points.
Panama finished second and also advanced to play the second-place team from Group C on Sunday in Houston.
“Anytime the national team wins, it lifts our country’s spirits,” Honduras Coach Jose De La Paz said. “This accomplishment is a great accomplishment, but we also want to do even better.”
Canada 2, Cuba 1 -- Atiba Hutchinson and Ali Gerba scored second-half goals at Foxboro, Mass., to lead the Canadians, who were all but eliminated in the first round of the tournament for the second consecutive time.
Canada needed to beat Cuba by three goals for a realistic chance to reach the quarterfinals.
Cuba was without forward Maikel Galindo and backup goalkeeper Odelin Molina, and a Spanish-language television station reported that they did not arrive at the stadium with the team and might have defected.
Colombia 2, Trinidad and Tobago 0 -- Abel Aguilar and Hector Hurtado scored in a three-minute span in the second half to lead Colombia at Miami.
Colombia, which lost its first two tournament games, needed a victory to stay in contention for a quarterfinal berth as a third-place finisher in Group A.
Colombia will play the Group C winner in Houston on Sunday.
