Intense winds cut power to more than 2,800 homes and businesses Friday afternoon and caused heavy damage to at least three houses, according to authorities.
The winds began about 2:30 p.m., knocking down six power poles and tearing half the roof off one home in the Sunmore Estates housing development near Amboy Road, officials said.
“At first there were signs that it might have been caused by a tornado, but the weather service termed it a microburst,” said Twentynine Palms Fire Chief Jim Thompson.
