More than 400 Uzbeks who fled to neighboring Kyrgyzstan in May when troops quelled an uprising will be resettled in Canada, the United States and other countries, a spokesman for Canada’s Immigration Ministry said in Ottawa.
He said that “as part of a larger international operation with other resettlement countries, including the United States,” Canada had agreed to resettle up to 50 of the refugees.
Witnesses say about 500 protesters were killed May 13 in Andijon. Uzbek authorities say 187 people, mostly “terrorists and extremists,” were killed.
