Riverside County fire stations are now ready to accept surrendered newborns, fire officials announced Tuesday.
The Board of Supervisors in March voted to designate firehouses as places where mothers can surrender unwanted newborns without fear of prosecution. Hospitals were already allowed to accept infants under a state law passed in 2001.
The law lets parents surrender a baby within three days of birth as long as there has been no abuse. Parents who show they can care for their infant can reclaim the child within 14 days.
