Hundreds of Bangladeshis have fled parts of northeast India after a group launched a campaign against suspected illegal migrants from the neighboring country, officials said.
The Chiring Chapori Youth Forum has been sending cellphone text messages to people in Dibrugarh district in India’s Assam state asking residents to take an oath of “No food, no job, no shelter to Bangladeshis.”
Fearing attacks, about 300 Bangladeshis have moved to nearby districts, police said. State officials have ordered an investigation of the anti-migrant drive.
